Common questions
About where I see clients, paying, the first session and what is private. If your question is not here, ask.
Where do you see clients, and do I have to be in Oregon?
I see clients in person in Portland, and by secure video in Oregon, where I am licensed. For video, you need to be physically in Oregon when we meet, even if you live elsewhere or are traveling. If you are outside Oregon, I can suggest where to look.
Do you take my insurance?
I am out of network, so I don't bill insurance directly, and I don't bill Medicare or Medicaid. Many plans with out-of-network benefits reimburse part of a session. How fees work explains the rest.
What is a superbill and how do I use it?
A superbill is a monthly itemized receipt you send to your plan to ask for reimbursement. It carries a diagnosis code, which your insurer sees, and your plan decides whether it may reimburse any of it.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what care will cost before you start. I give you one in writing in advance, and How fees work has the rest of your rights.
How much does it cost and how do fees work?
I give you the fee in writing before your first session. You pay by card for each session, and a limited number of reduced-fee spots may be open. How fees work has the details.
Can I use an HSA or FSA card?
Yes. HSA and FSA cards work like any other card for a session.
What happens in the first session?
We talk about what brought you here, what you hope for and how sessions run. You don't need to prepare anything, and you decide at the end whether to book another.
How often and how long are sessions?
Individual sessions are 50 minutes and sessions with a partner are 80. We set the pace together, and you can change it as you go.
Can my partner come?
Yes. Partners can join for some or all sessions. Partners and family explains how, and how privacy works when one of you shares something alone.
What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time. If someone is in danger, call 911. This website and our voicemail are not monitored around the clock.
What is confidential and what are the limits?
What you say in session is private, with legal limits: danger to yourself or someone else, abuse of a child or an older adult, and a court order. I keep your records private and share them only as the law allows.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give 24 hours' notice. A session cancelled with less notice is charged the session fee, and I will talk with you if an emergency got in the way.
